Good memory. They were still married as of "Family Ties", and I don't believe the issue was addressed past that episode. I remember the deleted scenes showing George Michael hiding the marriage certificate in his sock drawer after Maeby asked him to rip it up (though that may not be cannon). Until they say otherwise, they're still technically married.
My God! I hope it shows up again. I'm not going to write a specific plot line (Mitch reads fanfiction, and throws out ideas because of it), but I'll point out some facts and let you draw your own conclusions. It appears George Michael could become rich from FaceBlock, Maeby was fired from FaceBlock, George Michael and Maeby are married, the marriage certificate is in the sock drawer, Maeby is a sex offender and thinks she'll have to live in Sudden Valley, George Michael and Maeby never fully (c-word) their marriage, Lindsay was a prostitute and Maeby wants to be nothing like her, Lucille "took a Bullet" to get money for the Bluth company and Lindsay wants to be nothing like her, and FaceBlock is not rea...dy.
By the way, I'm pretty sure no one ever pointed out to Maeby (or Tobias) that Lindsay is adopted. I found it kind of weird that it wasn't addressed.
I just always assumed that since Maeby and George Michael are legally cousins the marriage wasn't legitimate and was a clerical error. Even though Lindsay was adopted and Maeby was a test tube baby, they're still technically and legally family, and as George Michael knows so well cousins can't get married.
If you want to be technical about it, you're right for the wrong reasons. From what I've looked up, it's legal to marry your cousin in the state of California, but if you're under the age of 18 (cousin or not) you need parental consent.
Here's a wikipedia artcile cousin marriage law.
I was just going off what George Michael says in "The Ocean Walker":
George Michael: Well, I’ve been thinking. You know, I mean, every society has their own rules about this stuff. For instance, in some states, it’s legal to marry your own cousin. California’s blocked it twice, but that’s only because they tacked it onto an estate law thing that wasn’t gonna pass. We had the signatures...
Michael: You’re 16, and you know all that. She’s 30 and a half. She probably can’t list the seven Houses of Parliament.
From "The Ocean Walker"
Good point. Within the Arrested Development universe, there's some kind of unexplained error. At the very least, I'd assume Maeby doesn't know the law and could believe they're still married. Also, who knows how the law applies to adopted cousins?
Actually, I'm going to back track a little bit. I rewatched the relevant parts in "Family Ties." The narrator tells us the mock wedding was as "real and binding as the rice pudding the disoriented patients had throw at them." Based on that, I would have to disregard what George Michael says in "The Ocean Walker."
You're correct. As far as I'm concerned, they're married. It's also a world where Arnold Schwarzenegger's face is on marriage certificates. :-)
AD had G.O.B. get married in Season One and forgot about his wife until late in Season Two... GM+M's marriage could crop up in Season Five or the movie!
I'd like to see Maeby use the marriage to get her hands on George Michael's FakeBlock money -

In the same scene to be fair they, for the second time in the episode say there are 3 houses of parliment, there are only 2.
Also George Michael said it was blocked twice, it is possible that then a 3rd time it got through, particularly considering George Michael trails off and Michael returns to focusing on his own issues with Rita.
Particularly considering the revelation of the full details of the Rebel Ally love triangle, his FakeBlock disaster doomed to collapse and the family rumoured to be coming back togeather it's possible that the George Michael/Mabey spark may come back, we'll just have to wait and see.
